Itinerary Intro
Perched on a hillside overlooking Sun Moon Lake’s north side, Wenwu Temple blends majesty with spiritual depth. Formed in 1938 by merging the former Longfeng Temple and Yihua Hall, it showcases Northern Chinese architectural style and consists of three main halls: the front "Wenyun Hall" honoring the God of Literature, the middle "Wusheng Hall" for Lord Guan and General Yue Fei, and the rear "Dacheng Hall" for Confucius—the only Confucius temple in Taiwan featuring a central entrance. Its red guardian lions stand as iconic sentinels. The temple's terrace grants sweeping lake views—mesmerizing under a crisp blue sky or mist‑shrouded at dawn. Beyond, the "Year‑Stair Path" with its 366 steps symbolizes the days of the year and features 24 solar terms and wish‑ribbons—inviting quiet reflection and cultural discovery.

Located near the Ita Thao pier at Sun Moon Lake, the Ita Thao Shopping District offers a rich blend of indigenous culture, local crafts, and culinary delights. Popular fare includes freshly brewed Sun Moon Lake black tea, grilled mountain boar skewers, shottered millet mochi, and sweet tea-infused snacks—all set against a scenic lakeside backdrop. It’s a place to truly experience the essence and flavors of Sun Moon Lake, not just its views.

The Sun Moon Lake Ropeway is a scenic cable car line that connects the Ita Thao pier to the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, spanning 1.877 km with a ride time of about 7 minutes. With 86 gondolas in red, yellow, blue, and green—where the green gondolas are “crystal cabins” with transparent floors—visitors can enjoy panoramic aerial views over Sun Moon Lake and the surrounding mountains from above.

Shuishe Wharf is the primary boarding point for boat tours on Sun Moon Lake, located beside a bustling hub of hotels, cafes, and shops. Surrounded by lush mountains, it opens to tranquil waters and scenic walking trails like the nearby Hanbi Trail. Morning mist, spectacular sunsets, or a peaceful lakeside stroll—this pier offers a poetic entry into exploring Taiwan’s largest alpine lake. A convenient and atmospheric first stop.

Designed by architect Norihiko Dan, the Xiangshan Visitor Center features striking exposed-concrete architecture with sinuous wings that appear to embrace Sun Moon Lake. The cantilevered observation deck offers a sweeping, "infinity-edge" view of the lake and surrounding mountains—making the building itself a popular photographic landmark. Inside, exhibition spaces include seasonal multimedia presentations, industry displays, a gallery, and a nature-and-culture interpretive centre. With free parking, café service, and family-friendly amenities, it’s a modern and accessible gateway into the lake’s natural and cultural richness.
